NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Riverina Laboratory Technician Conference 2019

The recent Riverina Laboratory Technician Conference was held at Temora High School.

In January 2013 Temora High School hosted The Riverina Laboratory Technician Conference. Thirty Four Lab Techs travelled to Temora to attend the initial conference with Dr Phillip Crisp and his wife Eva presenting.

Conference creator Gillian Bett said the conference was born out of an unmet need for quality training for school Science Laboratory technicians.

With system changes and staff turnover Gillian decided last year, it was time to begin planning another conference. The Riverina Laboratory Technician Conference #2 was held on Monday the 29^th of April 2019 and was a huge success. Fifty four were in attendance from Government as well as non-Government schools. Attendees travelled from: Barham, Sydney Olympic Park, Oberon, Hay, North Albury, Ryde, Yass, Lavington, Culcairn, Corowa, Tumbarumba, Cowra, The Rock, Walla Walla, Narrandera, Albury, Yanco, Cootamundra, Wagga Wagga, Forbes, Parkes, Cootamundra, Temora, Leeton, Young, Griffith, Gundagai, Barellan, Harden-Murrumburrah, Parkes, West Wyalong, Junee, Coolamon, Ardlethan and Ariah Park.

The presenter Dr. Phillip Crisp is the author of Chemical Safety in Schools and is also the creator of RiskAssess a user friendly, online risk assessment system specific to Science in schools.

Dr Phillip and Eva thoroughly enjoyed their second visit to Temora and look forward to returning again in the future. Congratulations to our own Gillian Bett who put a great effort into organising the important training day.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Harmony Day 2019

On Thursday, the 21st of March 2019, Temora High celebrated Harmony Day with the help of the SRC who organised the event. Harmony Day is a NSW Government initiative that celebrates inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. Students and staff wore the colour orange because it traditionally signifies social communication and meaningful conversations.

The Temora High SRC planned many activities for students to enjoy on the day, including a photography and poster competition display, which many students entered and enjoyed. During lunchtime the SRC set up a multicultural food stand. All of the food available for purchase was made by the talented Year 8 Food Tech students. They made a variety of interesting and delicious food including Tacos, Thai Chicken Cakes, Vegetarian Sushi and Kangaroo Mince Pies.

Harmony Day was a huge success as it promoted acceptance within the school and wider community. Thank you to the SRC students, Miss Taylor and Mrs Elphick, and especially to Mrs Mueller for all her hard work towards making the event a success!

Follow your heart, not the herd

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

Education Week 2018 - Today's schools creating tomorrow's world

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from August 6 – 10 as students, teachers and parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018.

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

Australian All Schools Athletics Championships

The talented Sophie Bowley competed at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championship in Adelaide recently. She came away with a gold in the 4 x 100m U14 girls relay and 9th in the U14 girls 100m. Such a fantasic effort, Congratulations Sophie!

THS Footwear

The Temora High School Executive have reaffirmed the Department of Education (DoE) and THS School Policy on Footwear at their 2017 Term 1 Week 5 meeting .

The DoE through its Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy is committed to providing a safe working and learning environment for all employees, students & visitors.

Footwear is an important safety item. In accordance with the Safe Working Policy the DoE has identified areas within the workplace that require specific & appropriate footwear is required & MUST be worn by all in those areas.

Areas where ENCLOSED LEATHER footwear MUST be worn:

All Industrial Arts areas

All workshops

All Agricultural areas

All Science laboratories

All Canteen, Food Tech and Hospitality areas

All D&T areas

Conversely all schools are entitled to make Footwear Policy around good, sensible and safe footwear to be worn in the rest of the school.

If this policy is supported by the schools governing parent body (P&C) then students, teachers and parents are to adhere to this Policy.

General THS Footwear Policy as agreed by the THS P&C requires enclosed solid footwear in either Black, Brown or white.

NO bright fluorescent colours are allowed. Colours such as orange, lime cannot be worn as general footwear at THS.

The footwear rules will be enforced at THS.

Proud and Deadly Award - Abbie Trindall

Congratulations to Abbie Trindall, Year 10, on being awarded a Proud and Deadly Award at Cootamundra last week. Abbie is a deserving recipient.

Abbie is a resilient student who at times portrays a mature attitude beyond her years. She has a sense of fairness that she employs in her everyday life. Abbie displays a quiet determination and this can have a positive impact upon her peers.

She is an attentive listener who will ask quality questions when she wishes to know more or does not understand. Abbie willingly takes on advice from expert sources. She effectively displays an ability to manage her time and prioritise tasks.

Abbie has shown a caring attitude to her fellow classmates, providing support and encouragement at times when needed.

Abbie is continuing to strive towards her future goals with the support of students and staff at THS.

Abbie has displayed an interest in cultural events and has volunteered to present relevant items at school assemblies.

Local Science Whiz Griffin Pinney

Aspiring local science whizzes have been told they could be the key to solving some of the world's future problems.

Riverina Year 11 students were awarded Victor Chang School Science Awards on Wednesday, 9th November for their excellent achievement and passion for science.

Local science whiz Griffin Pinney of Temora High School was presented with his award by Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute research scientist Dr Christopher Stanley at a Riverina presentation ceremony hosted by Junee High School.

The ceremony was attended by his parents Dale and Narelle, Principal Pat Nethery and Head Teacher Science Moira Burns.

Dr Stanley shared his journey in science from an inquisitive youngster tinkering with a chemistry set to his current role making discoveries "that nobody else in the world knows about yet".

He urged students to follow their passions and dreams of pursuing a career in science.

MindMatters - Mental Health Initiative

Over the last two years Temora High School has been part of the Mental Health Initiative called MindMatters. It aims to improve mental health and wellbeing of Young People. It recognises the important role that parents and carers play in the lives of their children and encourages an effective working relationship between school staff, parents and carers, students and the wider community.

We decided to take small, carefully planned steps to make the most of this initiative and to extend some of the great programs already in place at our school. We now ask for your views about our school and its capacity to support student mental health and wellbeing. This survey is one way to seek the opinion of parents and families. "Community Conversation" Meeting

On Thursday 20^th October I had the privilege of taking a group of Year 10 and 11 students to a "Community Conversation" meeting. This meeting was organised by the Temora Shire Council and included students from most schools in the area. It involved students identifying the positive attributes and facilities in the community and also provided the opportunity for students to recommend future directions. I was incredibly impressed by how proud the students are of the community and how positively they spoke about Temora and surrounding communities. The students also put forward a range of excellent ideas for the future and they suggested additional activities that they would like to see take place.

The Temora High School students that took part are pictured below with Kim Sandgren (Youth Officer – Temora Shire Council). I would like to thank all students for their leadership and for their positive contribution to the future of this great community.

Each year, Temora High School staff work with the Temora Branch of the Rotary Club to award students with the Fine Young Aussie.

The Fine Young Aussie award is a prestigious award presented to students for continued excellence.

NSW CHS Athletics

Five Temora High individuals, and three relay teams competed in the NSW CHS athletics championships in Homebush in early September. This carnival sees two competitors from each of the 10 NSW Combined High Schools sporting regions compete against each other. The competition was extremely strong, as competitors are chosen from all government schools across the state.

Sophie Bowley competed in the 12 years' girls 100 and 200m events as well as discus and long jump, while Eva Reichstein competed in the 15 years' girls long jump, and Ruby Watterson in the 12 years' girls 800m.

Sophie was successful in gaining a place in the final of the 100m, where she placed 9th in 13.85sec. In the 200 she was 17th in 30.14sec, long jump 12th with a jump of 4.23m, and discus 19th with 16.23m.

Eva jumped 4.77m to place 11th in the long jump, while Ruby was unable to complete her event due to sickness.

Will Shuttleworth competed in the 15 years' boys triple jump, and came 14th with a jump of 10.63m. He also threw the javelin 34.29m to be placed 15th.

Year 7 student Damian Wells putted the shot 11.55m to be placed 12th, and then threw the discus 27.44m to place 10th.

The 12 years' girls relay team of Sophie Bowley, Ruby Watterson, Kasey Shea and Katie Holmes ran 63.27sec to place 12th.

The 15 years' girls team of Zardiah McCausland-Keith, Helen McLaren, Emily Buerckner and Eva Reichstein ran a time of 56.48sec and placed 14th, while the 15 years' boys team of Lachlan Leary, Will Shuttleworth, Bernard Ricketts and Harrison Weir ran themselves into 14th position with a time of 50.27sec.

On September, 3rd Temora High School ran a stall at the Temora Business Expo. The aim of the expo was to give both Temora locals and people increased knowledge about the products, services and businesses within our local area. It was held in the aviation hangar at the Temora aviation museum and despite atrocious weather conditions and a cancellation of the air show more than three hundred people went through the expo.

Tom McGrath and Sophie Bowley were brilliant ambassadors for the school. They played a pivotal role in directing visitors to our stall. Ross Devereux demonstrated coding through the use of Sphero which is a spherical robot toy controlled by a tablet. Brett Inch was busy throughout the four hours demonstrating a 3D printer. For many people it was the first time they had seen one working.

Our unique Temora High Sample Bags were a great hit with over 120 being given away on the day. The contents were supplied by each faculty and it was a great way of showcasing the work done at the high school. Sue James proved adept at ensuring most participants were provided with the bags.

Ladies Eleven

This term eleven lucky ladies participated in the Ladies Eleven program. Frisbee, tie-dying, cupcakes, yoga, automotive care, coffee shop, polar fleece blankets, boxing, crafts including glass cutting and dream catchers, Drumbeat and gardening were all on the agenda. Tractor driving unfortunately didn't get a run this term due to a very soggy oval, much to the girls' disappointment!

Lads and Ladies Eleven is a concept which has evolved over the years, but still hinges on the concept of allowing students the chance to collaborate in a small group setting with students they might not usually socialise with. It develops confidence, interpersonal skills and encourages the students to work outside of their comfort zone.

Teachers nominate students and the group is finally culled to around 11 students (hence the name!) I'm sure all past candidates would agree that they've

been lucky to have been chosen to take part in these great activities and staff enjoy watching these students excel in settings outside the regular classroom.

I would like to thank Mrs Liz LaTrobe, Mr Angel, Mr Irvine, Mrs Groth, Mr Inch, Mrs Schiller, Ms Bruce, Mrs Willoughby, Mrs Breust, Mr Hackett, Miss Kenaly, Mrs Brennan, Ms Starke and Mrs Anne Macauley for their contributions this year and also to the other staff from previous years who have graciously given their time and shared their secret talents with students! Who ever knew Mr Hudson could crochet???!!!

Our dance students have had some great opportunities this term. A group from Temora High School-including some interested adults- travelled to Griffith Regional Theatre on 24th August to watch world acclaimed Sydney Dance Company. The company performed 2 works, the first being the highly entertaining and comical ‘Cacti', which featured a live string quartet. In stark contrast to this work, Act 2 featured ‘CounterMove', a highly intense and rigorous dance work which highlighted the athletic and artistic prowess of the dancers in this outstanding dance company. This was a rare opportunity to see SDC in our own ‘backyard' and all agreed it was worth the effort. I encourage you to check out highlights of this production on YouTube! Special thanks to our bus driver Ms Helen Tyack.

On the performance front, Year 9 dance, Year 10 dance and the combined ensemble of Year 11 dance plus selected Year 7 and Year 12 dancers, recently performed at the Wagga Eisteddfod at the Kyeamba Smith Hall, Wagga. All 3 groups performed extremely well, with each receiving a highly commended from the adjudicator. Each performance opportunity is of great benefit to our students and I was very proud of how they performed and conducted themselves on the day.

Temora High School sent a team of athletes to the Riverina Athletics carnival in Albury on the 12th of August. The carnival had been postponed from an earlier date, and athletes were keen to get into the competition on the day.

Many personal bests were recorded, and many students were selected to attend the NSW CHS athletics in Sydney on the 7th, 8th and 9th of September.

Athletes who placed first or second in an event earned their way into the Riverina team.

Sophie Bowley was Temora's best performer, placing in 4 events

Girls 200 Meter Dash 12 Years 29.29 (1)

Girls 100 Meter Dash 12 Years 14.55 (1)

Girls Discus Throw 750gms 12 Years 14.90m (2)

Girls Long Jump 12 Years 3.92m (2)

Will Shuttleworth recorded two events in the top two:

Boys Javelin Throw 15 Years 30.40m (2), and

Boys Triple Jump 15 & Under 11.53m (1)

Damian Wells also secured a place in the team with two second places.

Ruby Watterson placed second in the 12 years girls 800m in a time of 3:01.12 also earning her a place in the team.

The girls 12 years relay team of Sophie Bowley, Kasey Shea, Katie Holmes and Ruby Watterson placed 2nd, 1:03.23, as did the 15 years girls team, of Eva Reichstein, Zardiah McCausland-Keith, Kimberly Jordan and Emily Buerkner, in 57.74.

The 15 years boys team of Lachlan Leary, Will Shuttleworth, Bernard Ricketts and Harrison Weir placed first in their event in a time of 50.55.

All of these athletes will be preparing for their next event in three weeks time.

The Victor Chang Awards were established to continue Dr Chang's legacy and to promote and inspire students to pursue a career in science or health and medical research.

Walking Wounded founder, Brian Freeman is undertaking the Great Australian Traverse – a hike from Cape York to Tasmania to raise money for families of those affected by war.

Temora residents are asked to show their support by attending a sausage sizzle in Paleface Park with all proceeds going to the Walking Wounded fund.

Each year we survey students, parents and staff on their thoughts of THS.

We are asking students to fill out two surveys:

1. Schools Survey - sent to their student DEC email

2. Tell them From me - will be completed in classtime before the end of term. Parents were sent information regarding this survey in the week 5 newsletter. Parents who do not wish their child to complete the survey are asked to sign and send back the notification sheet regarding this.

We are asking parents to fill out one survey by Tuesday 24th March.

Later on in the year, we will ask parents to complete the parent survey for Tell them from me.

Temora HS has always been a proud uniform school and will continue to do so. At the end of 2014, after a meeting of the school P&C, it was decided that the school emblem be added to the Years 7 to 10 red school shirt and the Year 11 to 12 white school shirt. This addition will indicate that the shirts will have the school emblem, just like the school jumpers, jackets, blazers, formal shirts and school sporting tops.

The Board of TDEF are calling for Temora Shire Young People, aged between 16-21 years, to apply for Grant Funding.

Applications are now being called for this year's round of grants. Forms are online at www.cef.org.au (Temora Foundation).

We are encouraging all tradesmen, University students, TAFE students, or, youngsters with a desire to start a business – to apply.

Grants are allocated as NON-CASH grants. Instead, the youngster is reimbursed for education/work related expenses (Eg. text books, tools, petrol, work equipment, accommodation, computers etc.)

Grants are NOT focused on academic success, they are based on financial need and a passion for what you wish to do.

RE: CHANGED ARRANGEMENTS FRIDAY, 8^TH AUGUST, 2014

Due to the funeral of Temora man and friend to many THS Staff, Joe Kotzur, there will be slight adjustments to normal schooling on Friday, 8^th August, 2014.

Year 12 exams of Geography and VET Construction will be moved from MPU to Room 28.
Year 11 students will attend Private Study periods (5 and 6) in the Library
Years 7 – 10 students will go to DEAR as usual. Some students will be asked during this time to help with MPU pack up.

At 2.30pm students from 7-10 will watch a slideshow of THS students and staff, showcasing the achievements and activities.

Following this they will then move to the oval for a teamwork challenge.

All students will be dismissed at 3.30pm as per usual.

We apologise for the inconvenience but it is necessary for the safety and supervision of all students.

Up to 80 of these scholarships are exclusively available for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students to train as teachers in primary or any secondary subject.

There are also up to 50 teach.Rural Scholarships for HSC students willing to teach in rural and remote locations in any subject area.

Cadetships and Internships

Great Teaching, Inspired Learning Cadetships and Internships offer part-time work as operational and educational paraprofessionals under the guidance and supervision of experienced teachers while completing teacher education studies. Cadets and interns are remunerated for their time and guaranteed a permanent teaching position on completion of their studies.

Incentive Scholarship Program

Students in their final two semesters of teacher education studies can be rewarded with financial benefits and a guaranteed permanent teaching appointment once they've completed their training to become a teacher of either mathematics, physics, special education (K-12), or Technological and Applied Studies through the Incentive Scholarship Program.

The HSC Journey

The last half of the school year is very much 'HSC focussed'. It is for the vast majority of school students the last step of a 13-year journey. From day one in Kindergarten to 'pens down' in the final HSC exam, schools and teachers are building knowledge and skills.

When primary school teachers talk to their Year 6 students, as they are now, about high school, it is their work over seven years that has prepared the students for what is an exciting and new experience.

When teachers of Year 7 students take their classes for the first time in January, and now six months on see how well the students have adapted to high school, it is their success that has readied the students for the next six years of their education.

For teachers of Year 10 students selecting HSC subjects and considering their options, their understanding of the individual student and the choices they can make plays a vital role in the decision making process.

It is the behaviours learnt in the early high school years that serve our students well when as young adults they start, as they are now, their last formal school term ahead of our internationally regarded NSW Higher School Certificate.

We celebrate the HSC because of how it connects the 13 years of schooling even for those students who choose a path other than the HSC. As for all students - whenever they leave school - the NSW and HSC syllabuses work to prepare them for life beyond school.

On the term 2 School Development Day, we had over 100 staff from the 4 temora schools come together for a combined meeting.

Staff from Temora High, temora Public, Temora West and St Annes joined together to improve our knolwedge and ability to deal with issues involving mental health.

Guest speaker from Headspace, Leonie Everett and the Temora public schools counsellor Jo Brennan presented to the audiance.

We look forward to more learning activities together.

Attendance

Please inform the school if your child is absent. This can be done by either calling or sending a letter with your child when they return. We aim to increase our attendance rate from 89.5% to 91% this year. Every day missed can take 2 days to catch up on work. Birthdays, not liking 1 class, having an issue with a friend are not legitimate reasons for a student to have a day off school.

e-Diary

Thank you to the many parents who have signed up to our e-Diary. Parents and students are then able to access the e-Diary website to check what is coming up. Please check your child's student portal account to see if they have activated their account, by accepting the email that was sent to them. This will allow your child to access their e-Diary account.

It is vital that we have a parent's email address to enable sign up. Please contact the school with your email address if you have not done so.

School Development Days

Each year, school staff take part in 5 School Development Days, 1 each at the beginning of Terms, 1 2 & 3 and 2 days at the end of Term 4. This year, the majority of school staff will be taking professional learning opportunities on 4 afternoon occasions. This is to make further refinements to teaching practices and to take advantage of professional learning opportunities during the year. Some staff will still be undertaking professional learning during the last 2 days. I am informing you of this change, as you may wish to speak with staff on the last 2 school days. Please contact staff in the week leading up to the last week if you need to speak with them.

We were very excited to host our first THS & Beyond event on Friday 28th March.

Our guest speakers were at TPS & TWPS in the morning, then presented to Years 7 to 10 in the afternoon.

Tha main event was our evening show, with great speakers then a great light supper.

We had a lot of community members come to hear from these fantastic speakers.

THS now has eDiaries

Temora High School has provided all of our students with electronic diaries. These diaries are available through any web browser and can be access from:

All students have been sent an invitation to their DEC email addresses. This email service is accessible through the DEC student portal. The email contains a link that will confirm the students access to eDiaries and allow them to set the password for the diary.

Parents and caregivers have also been sent an invitation to join eDiaries. This facility will allow parents and caregivers to check what homework has been set and completed by our students. A small eDiary handbook is available to make getting started easier.

If any parents or caregivers haven't received an email invitation they should contact the school to provide a current email address.

2014 School ambulance cover arrangements

2014 School Ambulance Cover Scheme

Since 2012, the Department has negotiated an agreement with the NSW Ambulance Service to commence an annual licensing arrangement for school student ambulance cover for all public schools in NSW. Arrangements for the scheme have now been confirmed for the 2014 school year.

The Ambulance Cover Scheme provides assurance that if a student has an accident or falls ill whilst at school or on an organised school excursion or activity, and requires the ambulance service, the cost will be met through the scheme.

The terms and conditions of the Student Ambulance Group Cover Scheme - Schools are outlined in the NSW Ambulance Group Cover Scheme – Schools: Policy Guidelines.

Presentation Day

Thank you to all family, friends and community members who were able to celebrate with us at the annual Presentation Day.

Our SRC Executive committee, in alphabetical order, of Travis Block, Beatrice Drumore, Sarah Lavelle and Tyson Pinney capably led the assembly. We highlighted many achievements for the year and it was great to welcome back ex-student Aimee Lanyon and Year 12 students to collect awards.

Also congratulations to three staff who were recognised for their contribution to Public Education - Mr Ian Corby, Mrs Jill Corby and Mrs Marg Preston.

Thanks again to Mrs Bruest and Ms Tyack for their fantastic efforts in putting the program together, along with Mr Willoughby and the Stage Band, and Ms Townsend and the Glee Club for their performances.

2014 CEFA Scholarships

The Country Education Foundation of Australia helps thousands of students and have helped many of our own students over the years as well. They have sent information to THS that thousands of dollars worth of grants and scholarships for university and college courses in Australia goes begging because no one applies for them.

CEFA has released a guide to hundreds of scholarships worth over $100 000, in an effort to help rural and regional students tap into much needed assistance.

Stop work meeting - Tuesday 3rd November

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We have been notified that the NSW Teachers' Federation will hold a two hour stop work meeting between 9.00am – 11.00am on Tuesday 3^rdDecember to hear a report from the Presidential Officers for a new Salaries and Conditions Award and the NSW Public Sector Wages Policy.

The majority of teachers on mainstream classes at THS will be attending this meeting which is a TV link-up with other NSW centres.

Temora High School can only provide minimal supervision between 9-11am the morning of Tuesday 3rd December. Students may come to THS at the start of the day however there will only be minimal supervision.

The Library will be closed until 11.00am.

The THS Support Unit will be open as usual & those students who normally attend Pinnacle on Tuesday will follow the same procedures & do so as normal.

In consideration of the safety of students, parents & caregivers are advised that it would be best not to send students to Temora High School mainstream classes until 11.00am with the following exception. The Support Unit will be open as usual and Support Unit students to Pinnacle as usual.

The canteen will be operational from 11:00am.

Roll call will be at 11.20am and then normal classes will operate from 11.20am onward as usual on Tuesday 3^rdDecember.

In 2014, we are excited to be using a new electronic diary system, called e-Dairy. Parents and students will be able to log on to the website to access student's diary. Teachers and school staff will be uploading homework, assessment tasks, important dates, memos and other important information for parents and carers to access anywhere anytime.

However, we need parent's email addresses! Please contact the school and get your email address to us by either calling the school, writing it on a note or coming in to see us.

Premiers Sporting Challenge

On Thursday 28th November, 21 year 9 students traveled to Young to join with Young HS and Junee HS in another premiers Sporting Challenge day. This day was focused on "Learning to Lead", with students further developing their skills in planning, organising and managing sports sessions. The next part of their coaching challenge is the organisation of a Sports gala day in 2014 for students in Year 5 & 6 from Temora Public and Temora West Public schools and students in year 7 & 8 from Temora HS. Although a hot day, the students were fantastic in their positive attitude and willingness to be involved and learn. Well done!

Congratulations to the Year 12 class of 2013 who have completed their HSC exams and were farewelled at the Graduation dinner on Thursday 7th November.

A fabulous night was well decorated by Mrs Mueller and Year 9 students.

All the students looked wonderful, with many "selfies" throughout the evening.

Special thank you to Jess L who has donated her black, leather school shoes, for any girl who does not have appropriate footwear for school and needs some shoes! Thanks Jess!

Also congratulations to staff for winning the annual "Year 12 versus Staff" sports gtame. Again the staff were victorious, this time at softball.

Cool Heads Road Safety program with Year 10

Our Year 10 group was involved in the Cool Heads Road Safety Program on Friday 11th October, with some parents also taking up the invitation to attend the presentation.

In a combined schools event with St Anne's Year 10 class, our students, teachers and parents were educated, saddened and encouraged by the fantastic presenters.

We thank Meg Pigram, Taz Rundle, Senior Constable Matt Davenport, Peter Allen, Vicki Richardson, Bruce Barrett and members of the Temora SES for their presentations.

Our Year 10 Drama class under the tutelage of Ms Townsend competed in the Dramatic Minds festival last week. In a great outcome, the Year 10 class were awarded winners of the event, outperforming drama groups from West Wyalong, Coolamon, Ariah Park, Junee and St Anne's Temora.

The Dramatic Minds Festival aims to de-stigmatise mental health and provide students with accurate information about mental health illness and where help is available, through researching, developing and performing short plays based on mental health issues, alongside other schools from the region.

Our students worked very hard developing their performance and performed this twice on Thursday, once in front of over 200 students and on the Thursday evening matinee session.

Year 9 attended the festival to view the THS performance, as well as a number of other schools, further developing their understanding of mental health and skills to help others.

The Dramatic Minds Festival coincides with "R U OK?" day, raising awareness of mental health in the wider community and connecting people.

PRINCIPAL'S LETTER to YEAR 12

END of YEAR PROCEDURES 2013

Congratulations on nearing the end of your high school career at Temora High School. It will be a significant achievement. The manner in which you have conducted yourself has made me proud to be your Principal. As you now enter the final stages of your HSC preparation, my thoughts will be with you.

Please read the following information carefully.

End of Timetable Lessons
- Formal lessons will cease at 3.10pm Tuesday, September 17^th. You are required to attend all scheduled lessons up to and including Tuesday, September 17^th.
- All students are required to attend an assembly practice Tuesday, September 17^th, Period 5 in the MPU – please be prompt.
- Study leave will follow the holidays – from Tuesday, October 8^thto Friday, October 11^th, 2013.
- Teaching staff will be available during this study leave and for the duration of your HSC exams to assist you. Please organise times with your teachers.
Last Day Activities – Wednesday, September 18^th, 2013
- The behaviour of most THS students in recent years has been acceptable at this time of the year. Most NSW State High Schools now no longer hold muck-up day activities. There will be NO final day muck-up activities at THS.
- The grounds of the school will be patrolled by security guards who will be under strict instructions to hand over to police any trespassers. From my experience, it is often non-school people who get involved in unsavoury matters on these days.
- Please don't destroy the good standing that Year 12 has with any silly or destructive behaviour. A moment's stupidity can destroy years of good relationships.
- If students wish to study on Wednesday, 18^thSeptember they must be in school uniform and sign in at the office. They will only be allowed to go to the Library and complete school work. Any student who appears intoxicated will be denied entry to the school and maybe referred to the Police for attempting to enter school grounds whilst intoxicated. Any other disruptive behaviour will lead to the student being told to leave and may lead to further disciplinary action.
Farewell Assembly – Thursday, September 19^th, 2013
- Your Year 12 Farewell Assembly will be held with the whole school in the MPU commencing at 9.30am.
- All academic awards pertaining to Year 12 students will be presented at this assembly.
- You are expected to attend in full school uniform.
- Please extend my personal invitation to your parents / guardians to attend this assembly and the morning tea to follow.
Signing Out From School
- You will be required to complete a formal clearance from the school immediately after you complete your last examination.
- Signing out involves returning all textbooks, library books, school resources borrowed during your time at Temora High; and of course, the payment of any outstanding accounts.
- The sign-out form is to be collected from the Front Office and once it is completed by all your teachers, it is returned to me.
- Mrs Leary will conduct an official computer sign out and configuration allowing Year 12 students to have their laptop unlocked and signed over to them.
Year 12 Farewell Dinner - Thursday, November 7th, 2013
- Venue : Temora Golf Club
- Cost to be advised on the invitation
- The formal part of the evening will commence at 7.00pm for 7:30pm meal. Once the formal part of the evening is over, then it will no longer be a school function.
- Who attends: Year 12 students who are graduating with their HSC in 2013 and their parents or guardians and THS staff.
- NB: Department of Education & Communities policy states that school functions must be alcohol free. Until the formal part of the evening concludes NO THS student may consume alcohol, regardless of whether they have attained 18 years of age.
School Presentation Day - Tuesday, December 17^th, 2013
- This will be held in the MPU, commencing at 9:30am.
- Year 12 students who are to receive a major award are expected to attend and be at the MPU by 8:45am for a photo opportunity.
- You will be notified by mailed invitation if you are to receive a major award.
- If you are unable to attend, please inform the Office as soon as possible.
The Higher School Certificate
- The exams will be held in the school's MPU.
- The Presiding Officer employed by the Board of Studies to supervise the exams is Mrs Debbie Block.
- Exams commence on Monday, October, 14^that 11.20pm for English Standard and Advanced Paper 1 students.
- All students are advised to attend all scheduled exams no less than 30 minutes prior to commencement times.
- You need to check your examination timetable carefully. Misreading of the examination timetable will not be considered by the Board of Studies, as a valid excuse for poor performance or a reason for an Illness/Misadventure Application.
Illness, Accident or Misadventure Request
- If illness or misadventure prevents you from attending an examination or may adversely affect your performance in an examination, please contact the Principal immediately. If illness is the reason you will certainly require a Medical Certificate.
- If you are sick during the course of an examination you should bring this to the attention of the Presiding Officer during the examination, and see the Principal as soon as you leave the examination room. You will then be directed to seek immediate medical attention.
- The appropriate Illness, Accident and Misadventure request form is available from the Principal and/or the Presiding Officer.
- Students need to submit the Illness, Accident and Misadventure request form as soon as possible after the examination.
Higher School Certificate Assessments and Rank Order
- Students may request after November, 6^thand before, November, 11^th, 2013 a copy of their Assessment Rank Order for each HSC course. These will be available by accessing it from the BOS website using your pin number given to you earlier in the year. Please note that the assessment ranks on your Trial HSC reports should be your final assessment rank that will be sent to the BOS. After you receive your Semester 2 report please check your ranks and see the Principal immediately if you think any are incorrect. This must be done no later than 3.00pm on Monday, September 16^th, 2013.
- Following your HSC exams, if you wish to appeal any of your assessment rankings, you must download the forms from the BOS Students On-Line and submit the completed application to the Principal. The reasons for such a review must be clearly stated.
- Written requests for such a review close with the Principal at 3:30pm on November 11^th. Students will be advised of the outcome of the school-based review by Friday, November 15^th. However, it is much easier to resolve any problems before the marks are sent to the BOS on September 12^th.
- Students who are dissatisfied with the decision of the School's Committee of Review of HSC assessments may appeal to the Board of Studies.
Availability of HSC results
- HSC results will be available to students on the internet, through SMS, telephone and internet on Wednesday, December 18^th. ATARs will be available on the UAC web site from 9am on Thursday, December 19^th, 2013. We would like to hear your ATAR score so please contact the school when you obtain it.
- Student's HSC result letter and ATAR notice will be sent on Friday December 20^th 2013. Their formal credentials will be posted on Tuesday, January 14^th, 2014, and main round offers will be published on Thursday, January 16^th, 2014 at 9.00pm.
Careers Assistance

Mr Corby, Careers Adviser, will be available at Temora High School up to and including the last day of school (Friday, December 21^st) for Year 12 students and parents / guardians to discuss career options. Please phone him on 6978 0009 to make a mutually convenient time. He will also be available during school holidays at a mutually convenient time on 0427771988.

School References or Statement of Attainment.

You will need to complete the attached application form and return it to Mr Corby

by Friday, September 13^th. You may need this school reference for a job, for university

accommodation, all sorts of things, easier to get now than later. You can collect the

statement from the front officein Term 4.

Please hand the application to Mr Corby, ask a staff member to put your application in

Mr Corby's pigeonhole or leave the application at the office.

Don't sit the application on his desk or on his chair.

Scholarships: There are a variety of scholarships available.

The Royal Agricultural Society has introduced oneRAS Scholarship (Do a Google search). There are lots being advertised in the Metropolitan Newspapers every Saturday especially at this time of the year in the "Education Section". From now until the end of the year is absolutely critical for students to be looking for them. If you are applying to a university, check the university websites. Check UAC Equity Scholarships - you may qualify and it is worth applying. Also apply to the Temora & District Education Fund (TDEF).

Even if you don't think you will get a scholarship, apply anyway.

Brittany Turner- Rotary National Youth Science Forum

As part of the forum Brittany will participate in a series of activities designed to assist her in making informed decisions about courses and careers in the sciences. Science Hands on day- University of Technology Sydney (UTS)

Six of our year 9 students have met the criteria to allow them to participate in the Science hands on day. This opportunity has been made available through the Temora district education foundation. State of Origin excursion

50 students, parents and teachers from Temora HS made the journey to Sydney for the third State of Origin for a great 2 day excursion. All involved have spoken how great the trip was and are keen to know if they are eligible for 2014!

First on the agenda was a visit to the Penrith Panthers for a tour of the ground and facilities. Brian Hughes got up close and personal with the infamous Oak Fridge, while the students learnt from Sam Williams, a Penrith Development officer as well as coaching staff, including their Strength and Conditioning coach, Matt Ryan. Following a quick refuel at Krispy Kreme, we headed to our accommodation at the Newington Armoury. This historical secret, 5 minutes from ANZ Stadium, allowed us easy access to the venue, a solid place to stay and a link to Sydney's naval past, as the armoury was formerly the Royal Australian Naval Armament Depot (RANAD), with easy access to Homebush bay and the Parramatta river.

Wednesday night was the big night, with nearly all our crew supporting the Blues. With seats on the 40m loine but a fair way back, we enjoyed the game, but not so much the result. Plenty of food and drinks were consumed with the steps up to the seats proving a real test. After the game, Cold Rock ice-creamery received our business again, with a few celebrities out to be seen, including Petero Civinoceva and Shane Webcke.

Thursday morning came around quickly and the students enjoyed the Blaxland Riverside park, right next door to the Newington Armoury.

The ANZ stadium tour was a real highlight, going through the inner workings of the stadium, watching preparations for the Manchester United football game, as well as seeing the Blues dressing sheds and gear.

Another fantastic trip for Physical Activity and Sports Studies students at THS!

We welcome Mr Ian Groth to the Year 7 Year Advisor role for the remainder of 2013, as Ms Dodd takes Maternity leave. Mr Groth has a wealth of experience in teaching and welfare, previously taking year groups from Year 7 through to Year 12.

Mr Groth will be running year meetings each month, assisting students with welfare issues and can talk to parents about their year 7 child.

Year 12 received their Half-Yearly reports this afternoon. Some parents have already picked up their child's reports or have had them posted. This is a great opportunity to receive some valuable feedback about their efforts and Half-Yearly exams from their teachers. Mrs Bray, Year 12 Advisor, spoke to Year 12 about using this repotr to assess where they are at, improvements to make and areas to keep working on. Mr Corby stressed the importance of being organised and keeping their reports ready for the end of the year, when university early entrance forms, TDEF applications and UAC applications are due.

TDEF assisting Year 12 students

We thank local member of the Temora & District Education Fund (TDEF)Daryl Williams who was at Temora HS on Wednesday 8th May. He assisted students to write enhanced funding applications and to understand the application process better.

After this assistance session last year, student funding applications were greatly improved and the TDEF panel was impressed with the caliber of applications.

Funding can be sought by students leaving school for a range of destinations, including university, TaFE and work.

Australian Government Mobile Service Centre comes back to Temora

Australian Government Mobile Service Centres travel to rural and regional communities to provide people who live in rural or regional areas with information and access to government services.

Where: Hoskins St, near Paleface Park

When: Wednesday, 5th June

Time: 9am to 3pm.

They provide personalised face-to-face servicing to individuals and families who may not have easy access to a Department of Human Services office.
The Mobile Service Centres provide access to a range of government payments and services.
Staff onboard our Mobile Service Centres live and work in rural communities and can provide information, assistance and support to older Australians, families, students, jobseekers, people with disability, carers, farmers and self employed people.
From time to time, representatives from other government agencies travel with the Mobile Service Centres.

The Mobile Service Centres are equipped with:

a soundproof interview room
a soundproof Australian Hearing testing room
service/assistance desks
a waiting area
a publication display area
self service computer access
LCD display screens
disabled access
wireless IT connectivity for greater servicing flexibility.

24 Hour Stop Work Industrial

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We have been notified that the NSW Teachers' Federation and the NSW Public Service Association have directed all members to stop work for 24 hours on Thursday 8^th September.

The NSW TF has advised us that this action is designed to demonstrate its opposition to moves by the NSW Government to cut pay and working conditions and reduce the quality of services provided by teachers, nurses, health care workers, firefighters, police and other public sector employees.

The vast majority of teachers and executive at Temora High School will be supporting this industrial action on Thursday 8 September and so normal classes will not operate on that day.

As we cannot guarantee even minimal supervision Temora High school will be non operational. In consideration of the safety of students parents & caregivers are asked to make suitable alternative arrangements for their children for Thursday, Sept 8th, 2011.

Normal school will resume on Friday, September 9th.

The Year 11 Examinations will not be affected by the action as there are no examinations scheduled for September 8th.
